This is something everyone wants to do with Thunderbird, make it run quietly on the system tray on startup, like it's part of Windows. Here's what you need to do: (instructions are for vista, should be similar to XP)
- Install the minimizetotray addon.
- Restart Thunderbird, go to tools->addons. Click on minimizetotray 'Options'. Check all three options.
- Go to: "%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup", then paste a shortcut of Thunderbird.
- Right click the newly-pasted Thunderbird shortcut, click on properties. Select the 'Shortcut' tab, change the 'Run' option to 'Minimized'.
There you go! Thunderbird should now run every startup, at the system tray.
