So just what is a danag?
A Danag is a Filipino vampire. According to legend, The
danag helped people by planting taro on the land. The danag and the humans had a good partnership. But one time, a woman cut her finger, and the danag sucked her wound, and enjoyed the taste. The woman died because her blood was drained. Since then, the danag is considered evil.

'Danag' is a very old Visayan (Cebuano) word that means 'image/silhouette in the dark'. I haven't heard of any legends about them. I don't know where S. Meyers got hers. But our farmhands said these beings move as 'fast as the blink of an eye'.
Another anonymous contributor added that:
Danag was also mentioned in a book by a local Filipino writer David Hontiveros in his book "Parman".
And this book by Hontiveros was published prior to the publication of Twilight. So it seems that there are some Filipinos who really are familiar [or have heard] of it.

ReplyDeletei'm a full-blooded Filipino, but i'm not sure if i ever heard about Danags... sure there legends about aswangs, manananggals and sorts but Danag's kinda new to me...read about it on Ms. Meyer's book though :) twas nice of her to include Filipinos in her book, even if it's about a vampire.
ReplyDeleteWell,I'm 100 percent filipino and my grandparents never told me about a danag, they only told me about aswang, manananggal, multo, kapre,
ReplyDeletesantilmo or I saw them in tv in Verum S,or Nginiig,or Magandang gabi bayan every halloween. But It's kind of scary if your telling stories about them every night in philippines because sometimes me and my brother heard noises sometimes. My friends in philippines told me it was really non-fiction 'but others says it was a myth.
this is hilarious... I'm actually reading Twilight now, and paused for a minute to find out about "Danag". This is the first time I've heard about it. Honestly, I don't believe that there's such thing like danag or vampires. For me, seeing is believing.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, I'm enjoying the book so far, and it's very hard to put the book down. I can't wait to finish reading this book, so I start reading the next three.
When i read it in twilight i did the same thing. i just had to chek it out..It's the first time i heard of it and i'm a Filipino (for 25 long years). Seems to me Danags are not as popular as the aswngs.. it's nice though that Meyer mentioned a Filipino Vampire before mentioning any other kind...
ReplyDeleteOh, and i like the book.. i especially love the sarcasm when Bella and Edward talk to each other.. it's kinda funny
I'm a hundred percent Filipino and i love ghosts, vampires etc. but sure I've never heard about Danag. my grand-parents used to tell a stories about vampires, but they never told me about that Danag. well i guess i have to figure this one out. anyways, it was so nice of Ms. Meyer to include Filipinos in her book. god, i love her books!

ReplyDeletehi.!em a fulL Filipino.i think danag is not that popular like aswang's,manananggal coz ancient people buried the memories about it and tried not telL to anybody sxo people wont be scared and sxo people wilL forget all the storiie about vampirez..actualli i've never heard about Danag before, too, since i've read twilight book..but we dont have cluez if thatz true or itz juz a myth..like aswangs.i dont believe at it coz i've never seen one,but i relli dont hav clue f itz reaL ..maybe itz juz superstitious and formed by imaginations but we dont know..thatz wat ui think
ReplyDeleteI am from the Visayan part of the Philippines. I know what a "danag" is.

ReplyDeleteThis is almost exactly what it said in the first Twilight book by Stephenie Meyer
ReplyDeleteHeheh YEAH! I was just reading twilight! I researched danag and found it here! Wow! I am filipino put my school teaches nothing but british history. I never heard of a danag
ReplyDeleteHey guys! Im a 100% Filipino. And I'm just a little bit concerned why you guys haven't heard about "DANAG". It's one of the most popular horror stories in my province. Well, if you want to know about them you should watch thd movie "Ang anak ni Janice",that's about them, the "TYANAK". Oww,geezz, sorry. Sounds the same.. Really,as far as I know, there are no Danag stories that I have heard before. I just found about it in Twilight... That's really a fictional fiction story.
ReplyDeleteim also a full-blooded filipino...
ReplyDeletebut im not familiar with those danags...
i just read it from s.meyer's book..twilight..
that's why i search for it due curiosity i think, bella's character influenced me...haha..and i ended on this page..
yah..yah...those aswangs are really familiar to me...but a total no,no to danags...
hey i am also 100% filipino and i am a HUGE twighlight book fan. Unlike most of you i have found out about the danag. when i asked my grandpa about it his eyes went wide and his face ran a sickly pale but he said nothig. my granmas response was the same, so i asked my great great grandma and told me that when my parents were little they lived on a reservation which was attact by a danag and my family was the only survivors but my great granparents were killed my great great grandma said that are family is cursed by the danag and anyone who tells of them will be killed painfully. she passed away 3 days latter being murdered and nobody knows how. i am taking a chance cuase people have a right to know that they are out there.
ReplyDeleteexcuse me could you please add some very significant and concise meaning of danag... I am A pure Filipino but i never heard of it and it is so confusing that I COULD'NT find a good meaning of it... could you please post a blog that is more significant and concise about danag... and that means TO NOT USE THE MEANING IN THE BOOK "THE TWILIGHT" COZ ITS SO OBVIOUS THAT WE READ IT, AND WE CAN READ AND UNDERSTAND ENGLISH WORDS YOU KNOW???...
ReplyDeletehey lol its the exact words from the first Twilight book =P
ReplyDeleteDecember 17, 2008 12:39 PM
ohh yeah i agree. .
its exactly the word from the first book of twilight saga. lol =))
hey danag is also a word from one of the dialects in philippines. from area of luzon, ILOCANO dialect which mean "worries/ worry" i guess. hehehehehe
ReplyDeletei (a 100% filo) asked my (100% filo) mum and she said 'huh?' i didnt know that .. i asked her why and she said it was because it was never spoken of around her LOL
ReplyDeletebut i love stephenie meyer's twilight saga!!
In my research, because of the diversity of the ethnic groups of the regions, the Aswang, Bebarlangs, Danag, Mandurugo are all similiar in that they are vampiric. The Danag is responsible for plating taro on the island according to myth and legend, but I think that Mrs. Meyer chose to mention the "danag" in particular becuase of the Cullen's relationship to humans. They were originally very close to man according to legend. Mrs. Meyer definately did her research when writing a brilliant work of fiction. Cheers :)
ReplyDeleteGuys, Danag is not any other lamang lupa or kind of Mananangal or aswang. Meyer means that Danag is a Filipino Vampire NOT a kind of Mananagal or aswang. Danag is the NAME of that Filipino vampire. Got it?. Danag is an old stories from our grand parents and we don't really know if Danag really existed during that time.
ReplyDeleteStephenie Meyer says "A Danag is a Filipino vampire. According to legend, The
ReplyDeletedanag helped people by planting taro on the land. The danag and the humans had a good partnership. But one time, a woman cut her finger, and the danag sucked her wound, and enjoyed the taste. The woman died because her blood was drained. Since then, the danag is considered evil." in the Twilight Book, exactly the same words. Nice huh. I do love reading vampire books. I'm reading Vampire Kisses now... I'ts a series it has six(6) books but I heard from the authors website that she has a plan to make it seven(7) books.
Hi. I am only fifty percent Philipina, but my dad is whole. I asked him if he remembered any philipino legends from when he was little (i didn't want to say vampiric legends, because he is kinda against me liking Twilight) but he said no. I looked up the word 'Aswang' , which are a type of Philipino vampires, and it said that they are refered to as any kind of monster including a particular one. It's called a lycanth. Look it up. Lycanthropy is the study of wolf transformation! The aswang, Philipino vampires, were actually narrowed down to werewolf transforming. They have this weird conection and I can't figure it out. I even did lots of research. btw, I am with you guys on the whole Twilight is awsome. But I still cant believe that my dad hadnt heard any legends when he was a kid. Even I have.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.vampiresathruz.com/vampire-15/danag.html found it ;)

ReplyDeleteDanag is an ILOCANO word that describes the English word "worry/worries".
ReplyDeletearent you sick of it..?
ReplyDeletehindi ko pa naririnig ang danag na yan eh....
ReplyDeletedanag is used in calling a so-called vampire in antique
ReplyDeleteI agree. I first met the word in Twilight book... Just wondering why they use Filipino to some kind of mysterious foolish thing. Have you watched Constantine starrinf reeves.. The possesed women said "papatayin natin sila" in her demonic voice...kainis lang ;(
ReplyDeletei am a filipino and i really love twilight.. i was so surprised when i saw the "danag" on the book.. :) the definition above is really the same as what is in the book! :D haha
ReplyDeleteasa sasasasaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
ReplyDeleteI could stay awake, just to hear you breathing
ReplyDeleteWatch you smile wile you are sleeping…while you far away and dreaming.
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender.
I could stay lost in this moment forever.
Every moment I spend with you is a moment I treasure
Don’t wanna close my eyes; don’t wanna fall asleep…
‘Cause I miss you babe, and I don’t want to miss a thing…
‘Cause even when I dream of you,
The sweetest dream will never do, I’ll still miss you babe,
And I don’t want to miss a thing.
Lying close to you, feeling you’re heart beating…
And I’m wondering what you’re dreaming,
Wondering if it’s me you’re seeing.
Then I kissed your eyes and thank God we’re together.
I just wanna stay with you in this moment forever…
Forever and ever..
Don’t wanna close my eyes, don’t wanna fall asleep…
‘Cause I miss you babe, and I don’t want to miss a thing…
‘Cause even when I dream of you,
The sweetest dream will never do, I’ll still miss you babe,
And I don’t want to miss a thing.
And I don’t wanna miss one smile…
I don’t wanna miss one kiss…
I just wanna be right here with you, just like this…
I just wanna hold you close…
Feel your heart so close too mine.
And just wanna stay in this moment, for all the rest of time..
Yeah…yeah…yeah………..
I don’t wanna close my eyes!
Don’t wanna fall asleep!
‘Cause I miss you babe, and I don’t wanna miss a thing
‘Cause even when I dream of you…the sweetest dream will never do…
‘Cause I miss you babe, and I don’t wanna miss a thing
I'm Cebuana, my name is Dan-ag which mean light. I'm surprise to hear that it's also a vampire. I never heard of that.
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else, I haven't heard of danag until S. Meyer's book. I agree to what one contributor above said though, danag is an iloco word for "worry". :)
